Secondly, the main character of Dumbo is exquisitely expressed. The range of emotions he displays elicits intense sympathy from the viewer, making it impossible not to become involved in the story. Dumbo’s animator, Bill Tytla, remarked that he used his own son’s expressions as the basis for Dumbo.
The 70th Anniversary Dumbo DVD release contains a remastered transfer of the very highest quality. The colours are vivid and clean, taking on an almost luminous quality. Disney fans will gobble this up as a technicolor visual feast.
Dumbo 70th Anniversary Edition is planned for a US release early February 2011
Dumbo 70th Anniversary Edition was released in the UK 22 March 2010.
Reasons for Dumbo's Success
Walt Disney’s Dumbo (1941) was made as a cheap 'quickie' after the financial losses of Disney’s more lush productions Fantasia and Pinocchio.
Besides the strengths of the storyline and characterisation, there is the brilliant technique and artistry of the film-makers. Although Dumbo had to be made ‘on the cheap’, this does not mean aesthetic corners have been cut. The characters are all wonderfully drawn [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the backgrounds and landscapes, painted in watercolor, are enchantingly beautiful.
Firstly, the story of a misfit who uses his conspicuous handicap as a means of self-advancement [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], coupled with a mother’s fierce love for her child, has universal appeal. The story is also handled with great simplicity and economy.
Where Did the Idea for Dumbo Come From?
Dumbo’s Reception and Success
This is evident in the film’s simpler production values. Dumbo has the cartoon qualities of the Silly Symphonies series of shorts, while the painterly realism of classics like Fantasia and Bambi has been reserved for the film's backdrops.
Dumbo also has a very short running time of 64 minutes. Yet these self-imposed economies work to bring out the very best in the artists and animators involved in Dumbo's production. The result is a classic Disney film.
Dumbo's Brilliant Technique and Artistry
Dumbo in many ways was Disney’s return to the pure instinct and spontaneous creativity of his early years before Snow White. It paid off handsomely. The film turned out to be Disney’s most successful film of the 1940s. With a budget of $813,000, half that of Snow White, Dumbo would go on to gross $1.6 million during its original release.

Dumbo was based on a storyline written by Helen Aberson and illustrated by Harold Pearl for the prototype of a toy storytelling device, the ‘Roll-a-book’. There were only eight drawings and just a few lines of text in the original. When the story was brought to Disney’s attention by John Clarke Rose, then Research Director at Disney Studio, he immediately saw its possibilities. (It was Disney’s head of merchandise licensing, Kay Kamen [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who discovered the Dumbo prototype and told Rose about it.)
The DVD also contains bonus features, such as a fascinating half hour making-of documentary, deleted scenes, audio commentary and original Walt Disney television introduction.
The release is also available on Blu-ray.
There are two immediate reasons why Dumbo works so well.
