Detour: Classical Music or Classic Cinema
Departing from the Ankenes Marina in Narvik, Norway,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], teams had to travel more than 1,200 miles to St. Petersburg, Russia. Their journey required them to travel first by car, then by train to the airport in Stockholm, Sweden, before flying to St. Petersburg.
All teams traveled on the same train to Stockholm. The long ride gave them an opportunity to socialize and bond with one another. When they arrived, Chad and Stephanie were the last team to get a taxi. Chad accused Stephanie of taking too long to get ready when they had to get off the train. In spite of this early obstacle, all teams were able to book tickets on the first flight to St. Petersburg.
Palace Square
In the sixth episode of CBS’s The Amazing Race 17,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], titled “Run, Babushka, Run,” teams traveled from Narvik, Norway, to St. Petersburg, Russia, where they faced two incredibly difficult Detour options, dressed like babushka women to plant potatoes, and one team was spared in a non-elimination leg. Here’s a recap of what went down. (Spoilers follow)
Continuing to struggle with “Classical Music,” every team switched tasks except for Chad and Stephanie, who bickered and argued about their decisions. They decided to finish the piano task and, with Chad finally trusting Stephanie’s decisions, they were the only team to complete it correctly. Nat and Kat and Gary and Mallory then finished the Cinema task, while Nick and Vicki had a difficult time with this option as well. They ended up switching back to the Piano task and quickly finished this time by searching for one song at a time and staying calm.
Brook and Claire and Michael and Kevin both chose “Classic Cinema.” Although they were in the lead at first, Brook and Claire’s taxi didn’t know where the Lenfilm Studios was so Michael and Kevin arrived first. Meanwhile, Chad and Stephanie, Gary and Mallory, Nick and Vicki, and Nat and Kat all struggled with “Classical Music” due to the cacophony of sounds playing from the pianos. Each team made numerous incorrect guesses, especially Chad and Stephanie. Chad wanted to switch to the Cinema task, but Stephanie wanted to stick with it.
In “Classic Cinema,” teams had to make their way to a legendary film studio and onto a sound stage. Once there, they had to search through piles of film clips and find one that matched any part of the clip shown on the screen. When completed, the director gave them their next clue.
At the other Detour, Thomas and Jill were the first to find the correct film strip. Despite arriving later to the task,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Brook and Claire lucked out and quickly found a correct film strip. Moments later, Michael and Kevin finished the task as well.
Car, Train, Plane
In St. Petersburg, teams faced a Detour, which gave them a choice between two tasks. In “Classical Music,” teams had to make their way to a historic palace and find a room with a maestro and three gramophones. Once there, they had to listen to three different compositions being played, and then enter another room filled with pianos. There, they had to find the three pianos playing the same compositions as the three gramophones, and take the sheet music on top of the corresponding piano and place it into a folder. If they were correct, they received their next clue.
