It is not just that the cranky misanthropic chess master Larry David portrays in this film is basically a recycled version of the cranky misanthropic producer he plays in HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm. (David's endless complaining has a certain crusty charm and humor on his TV hit. Here it is just annoying, and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], worse, mean-spirited.) And it is not that Evan Rachel Wood is woefully miscast as a teen-aged white trash runaway who falls in love with David's character and (gasp!) marries him.
Whatever Works
Cassandra’s Dream, the third of Woody's shot-in-London feature films, landed with a thud in North America and went almost directly to DVD after a brief run in theatres. Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor work well together as morally and financially challenged brothers and Tom Wilkinson savors his role as the shifty uncle who makes them an offer they would like to refuse.
At the age of 72 Woody Allen still writes and directs one feature a year just as he has done since his 1970s heyday. Unfortunately his films do not draw as well as they once did. He was even forced at one point to retreat from his beloved New York to seek financing in Europe.
Following the modest box office success of 2008's made-in-Spain feature Vicky Christina Barcelona Woody returned home to New York to write and direct Whatever Works. Billed as a triumphant return to the Manhattan mythologized in fondly remembered films like Annie Hall,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Hannah and Her Sisters and Broadway Danny Rose, Allen's latest effort turns out to be a huge disappointment.
Cassandra's Dream
For awhile, the film almost works as a moody Hitchcockian suspense thriller. But it is all in a losing cause. The whole project has an unfinished quality about it and any goodwill the film may have built up in the early stages is scuttled by the film's closing scenes. And what's up with that abrupt ending? It's almost as if Allen tired of the project midway through the shoot and handed the raw footage to his editor and said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Here. You deal with it."
Ms. Wood's well-intentioned but desperately hammy performance here only reminds us how much better she is in dramatic roles like Mickey Rourke's estranged daughter in The Wrestler and the rebellious teenager in Thirteen. Also set in London this slapdash comedy seemed to be written on the back of a cocktail napkin simply so Woody could share the screen with Johansson following the success of their previous collaboration. (The veteran filmmaker stayed behind the camera for Match Point.) Hint: Ms. Scarlett plays a kooky journalism student and Woody is up to his old tricks as a low rent magician in this alleged murder mystery.

This 2005 release is the first of three films set in London and shot on location at key points in the English metropolis. Some critics have suggested the film is merely an updated arrangement of his 1989 magnum opus Crimes and Misdemeanors. Although it's easy to see the reference points, the film achieved its own identity as a smart sophisticated drama thanks to Allen's sharp writing (the film was Oscar nominated for Best Original Screenplay) and wily performances by Jonathan Rhys Meyers as a cold and calculating social climber and Scarlett Johansson and Emily Mortimer as the women in his life. Hint: Our ambitious anti-hero only has room for one woman in his plans which means somebody has to go.
