During Robin's time, England was Catholic and the common folk held a widespread resentment against corrupt monks, bishops, abbots and of course, the evil Sheriff. Robin lived and roamed in Sherwood Forest and wore his famous "Lincoln Green" camouflage attire,Supra Top Mens Shoes, and sometimes he frequented Nottingham to correct the wrongs done to the locals by the crafty Sheriff.
When he came to Robin's attention, Alan a Dale was a lovesick young man who couldn't keep his sweetheart. She was betrothed to a much older knight and her father was forcing her to marry him. However, once Robin found out about the situation,Supra Top Shoes, he and his men rescued the lady. She and Alan were married by Friar Tuck. Since Alan was a minstrel singer, he joined the outlaw band to provide the fireside entertainment.
John Little was another of Robin's earliest recruits. His name was deceptive as he was somewhere near seven feet tall. Robin met him when they tried to cross a narrow bridge from opposite sides at the same time. Neither would give way so they dueled with quarterstaves, and John knocked Robin into the river. Robin asked him to join the band, and John Little agreed. The Merry Men welcomed him into their group and nicknamed him "Little John."
The Band of Merry Men
Robin Hood, A Real Hero?
This companion always seemed to be in on the action but he didn't develop much of a personality. There was no story of how he joined the gang, but he might have been an ex-soldier or even a cousin or nephew of Robin himself.
It will never be known for sure if he was a living individual or a combination of real men and their stories. But it really doesn't matter. He's a legend and not likely to ever die. He first appeared on the scene in the mid-13th century. The story was that an evil king (King John) had taken over the throne while his brother (Good King Richard) had gone off on the Crusades. There are some theories that Robin might have been an alias for William Wallace, aka Braveheart.
The jovial, fat and balding friar was talented with a long bow and sword. In fact, he was renowned throughout all England for his skills. Robin, however, didn't know all that when first they met. He threatened him, and commanded the good-natured Tuck to carry him across a river. The good friar did so, but once on the other side, he drew his sword and they fought it out. The friar defeated Robin easily. Robin was so impressed that he asked the friar to join his outlaw band, and so Friar Tuck became one of the Merry Men.
Little John
Robin's Band of Merry Men varied in number from perhaps a dozen to seven score (140) to even some estimates of a mob of 300. That's alot of guys to be hanging out in the greenwood. Some of the early stories had them living in the tree tops in the canopy and dropping to the ground whenever Robin called. Outlaws and bandits did actually hide out in the forest in those days. It was dark,Supra Skytop Shoes, and the trees were dense. A spooky place to go on a picnic,Supra Strapped NS Shoes, but a good place to hide.
Robin possessed no supernatural qualities like modern-day fictional heros Superman or Spiderman. In fact, his Merry Men often had to bail him out of trouble. His signal to them was three blasts on his horn which he always carried with him. On hearing this, his rescuers dropped out of the trees and appeared almost magically in time to save him from any diabolical fiend. Robin needed that horn, as we shall see, because almost each one of his Merry Men beat him up when they first met.
