The more we can do to be environmentally responsible boaters, the more likely we will be able to continue enjoying access to the waterways we enjoy so much. Waterfront access continues to be a problem nationwide and establishment of clean marina standards can help with the environmental permitting required for a new mooring facility.
Marina operation and maintenance is the second area of interest in defining clean marina standards. I will briefly outline the measures considered in clean marina operations and maintenance:
Solid Waste - Properly dispose of solid wastes produced by marina operations, vessel cleaning [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], boat maintenance [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and repair to limit entry of solid wastes into the environment.Fish Waste - Promote sound fish waste management through use of fish-cleaning restrictions, public education, and proper disposal of fish waste.Liquid Material - Provide suitable storage, transfer, containment, and disposal facilities for used oil [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cleaning solvents, antifreeze, and bottom paints. Harbors should encourage recycling.Petroleum Control - Reduce fuel and oil from boat bilges and fueling operations from entering the water.Boat Cleaning - Perform cleaning operations that reduce the release of cleaners, solvents, and paint into the water.Public Education - Encourage public education programs focused on the preventing inappropriate disposal of polluting substances.Maintenance of Sewage Facilities - Provide adequate pumpout facilities and encourage their use. Boat Operation - Restrict activities that contribute to increased turbidity and erosion of shallow-water habitat.
As we discussed in the article Clean Marina Siting and Design how many boat harbors are becoming certified as clean or green marinas. Establishment of clean marinas fits well into the overarching concept of clean boating.
