The latest Health Department statistics show the high school smoking rate has further decreased to 12.6 percent in New York,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Constantakes said. In 2000,newport cigarettes, it was more than 27 percent, he said. New York’s spending on tobacco control and prevention was $85.5 million in the 2006 and 2007, Constantakes said. But the $58.4 million total this year is still $15 million more than in 2005, he said.
Bill Phelps,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a spokesman for Philip Morris USA, said states receive billions of dollars a year in tobacco-settlement payments from tobacco companies. They should use it to fund anti-smoking initiatives. States received a total of $8.8 billion in 2010, he said. “Not only have the vast majority of those states diverted billions of dollars that many had hoped would be spent on prevention of youth smoking and health programs, now many are seeking tax increases to help fund some of those same programs,” he said.
The decline in state funding means New York has not been able to do as much anti-smoking advertising, said Maureen Kenney, director of the state-funded POW’R Against Tobacco OW’R Cessation Center,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which serves Putnam, Orange,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Rockland and Westchester counties. One of the consequences is fewer smokers are getting the message that they should quit and are seeking help, she said.
The revival of the legendary John Player Special-Lotus colours may be great for nostalgic Formula One fans, but the historic black and gold paint scheme may cause some headaches for its team during Canadian Grand Prix in June. While it’s a neat tribute to the Lotus teams of the 1970s and 1980s, having the Renault F1 team’s car look even remotely similar to a cigarette pack likely violates Canada’s ban on tobacco advertising, even if it has no connection to the former sponsorship or the John Player Special (JPS) brand owner.
Renault F1 announced late last year that it would resurrect the JPS colours after signing a sponsorship deal with Group Lotus. None of Lotus’ rich history will matter to Health Canada,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which enforces the Tobacco Act, should the car appear on track in Montreal in June. Its spokesperson would not discuss the specific case of the JPS colour-scheme,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but said Health Canada “tobacco inspectors would need to fully review to assess whether a violation of the Tobacco Act has occurred” should a car painted to resemble a cigarette pack make an appearance on Montreal’s 13-turn, 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
If your New Year’s resolutions include a plan to give up smoking,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you might want to avoid the TV and steer clear of movies for a while, too. Scientists have found that simply watching movie stars take a drag on a cigarette is enough to spark a pattern of activity in smokers’ brains that mirrors the act of lighting up. This response to seeing smoking on screen is thought to make cravings more intense for those who are trying to quit a habit that kills 5 million people worldwide each year.
