When the 1901 census was made public it was advertised and the website crashed because so many people visited it, so the 1911 census was posted on line several years early without it being announced on the news.
If planning to visit the ancestral home, bear in mind the cottage where they lived 100 years ago may well have been demolished and replaced by Sainsburys. Look up the address on Google Maps to see if the road still exists and then check out Google Streetview.
Birth, marriage and death certificates usually have details of the child’s name, parents names, ages and occupations and their occupation and the address where they were living.
Redevelopment
Researchers will often find out about the secrets of their great grandparents which Granny never wanted to talk about. A quick comparison of the dates of a marriage and the first child’s birth certificate can reveal if the couple got married knowing the wife was pregnant. Or a birth certificate can reveal that a child’s father was not known.
Finally, researching the ancestors can be time consuming and expensive but the final result will be worth it.
The BBC’s programme Who Do You Think You Are, currently being shown on BBC 1 on Monday evenings, documents celebrities researching their family tree. Jeremy Irons often went to the same part of Ireland on holiday and then discovered his ancestors came from there. Bill Oddie arranged to meet a distant cousin he had never met before and the man looked exactly like him - small and tubby with a beard. Bruce Forsyth, who has been married 3 times discovered his grandfather also had 2 families unaware of each other’s existence.

Census Records
The national census has taken place every 10 years since 1841 except for during the Second World War. They give details of who was living where, how old they were, where they were born and what they do for a living. They are released to the public 100 years after it has taken place.
A lot of genealogical research can now be done online. Some websites provide free information while others charge. The National Archives website is a good place to start.

The Secrets of the Ancestors
All families are different and many parents and grandparents show their children old photographs and tell stories of the ancestors [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but not all do. People tend to start researching the ancestors as they get older, often prompted by the death of a parent and inheriting family documents.
If the area has been redeveloped then old photographs of what it was like before can still be found in local museums [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], history books and online.
A good place to start is with birth, marriage and death certificates and work backwards. Granny’s birth certificate [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for instance, will give names of the great grandparents, and where they lived, and so on.
