The movie is full of mini-stories that fold out of each other like nesting eggs or matryoshka dolls, which makes the plot hard to follow at times. The strength of the characters compensates for this however, and the overall effect is one of haunting beauty.
Synopsis
The film centers around four main characters: Benigno, Alicia, Marco and Lydia. Benigno is a male nurse caring for Alicia at the hospital where Marco stays by the bedside of his unconscious bullfighter girlfriend, Lydia. The movie is divided into four parts, each focusing on the story behind the relationship of each "couple": Lydia and Marco, Benigno and Alicia, Benigno and Marco, and finally, Marco and Alicia. The movie leaves the last relationship story untold however, finishing with hope of a new beginning for these two characters.
The movie can be hard to watch at times [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], due to the sheer sadness and pain it encompasses. Ultimately however, those who choose to watch will be well-rewarded, with a ravishing movie whose grief is matched only by its beauty.
Dance and music punctuate the movie, lightening a film that deals with death, unconsciousness, and the impossibility of love. The film starts off and ends with a dance sequence, choreographed by Pina Bausch. The bullfighting scene that results in Lydia's becoming unconscious is choreographed and set to music [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], giving it a dance-like quality. There is also a major scene involving a guest appearance by Caetano Veloso, the famous Brazilian singer.
The Characters
Marco finds out that Lydia had taken up with another bullfighter before her accident, and decides to go away. He reads about Lydia's death in a newspaper, and finds out that Benigno is in jail, accused of raping Alicia, who has been impregnated. Marco returns to Spain to help Benigno, but his failure to tell Benigno a crucial piece of information results in Benigno's suicide. At the end of the movie, Marco goes to a dance performance, only to find himself facing the reanimated Alicia, whose coma has been broken.
Marco stays by his girlfriend Lydia's bedside, dreaming of the times he shared with the woman whose broken body lies before him. Meanwhile, Benigno tells Marco the secret of his relationship with Alicia, which started before Alicia's accident, when Benigno saw her through his window [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and became obsessed. If Alicia's father knew the truth, he probably would not have hired Benigno to be Alicia's nurse.
Review
Talk to Her, (Hable Con Ella), was released in 2002. The film was directed by Pedro Almodovar, the acclaimed Spanish director whose works include Bad Education and Broken Embraces. The film garnered two Oscars for Pedro Almodovar: One for best director, another for best original screenplay. The film also won awards for best director and best film at the Bangkok International Film Festival.
