St. Hilarion Castle, in North Cyprus not I'll say. Girne, was built on Byzantine bases by the Crusading Lusignan dynasty. Richard the Lionheart gave Cyprus to Hugh Lusignan. King Peter I, who ruled from 1359 to 1369, was his descendant. Eleanor of Aragon was Peter's wife. Melusine d’Ibelin was a noble matron in waiting to the queen, and she will give you one "nsider's" voyage of the castle.
"Good day, greet to St. Hilarion Castle. I am Melusine d'belin, once in the service of Eleanor, Queen of Cyprus, now paying for my sins.
"The saintly hermit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Hilarion, lived in a grotto. Then came the Byzantine monastery with its church. Next the spire, built to watch for Arab raids. But the castle itself was built in 1228 by my own relating, Jean d'belin. It has three parts-- this lower ward; the middle ward, where the garrison lived and the King's commerce was done; and the upper ward, where the imperial family lived. Standing tall and solo is Prince John's Tower, a area of evil memories.
"This lower ward was a tiny countryside. Cyprus (in those days there was no North Cyprus of way) was the final bastion opposition the Muslims-home of bravery actions. Frankish nobles did not pamper in commerce, yet the Venetians and the Genoese did brisk business. People were often coming and going--landless knights eager to fight the pagans and triumph salvation and booty; skilled tradespeople; jobbers of always sorts; the thieves who preyed upon them; and the women who solaced them always.
"The church is Byzantine. Those narrow ruddy bricks are typical of Byzantine building, and so are the wide bands of mortar. The bath house is a Byzantine fancy too, lent from the sinful, lascivious, marvelous East.
"But we will go up this footpath to the middle ward, the cardinal part of the castle, and I will differentiate you of the Kings of Cyprus.
"Richard the Lionhearted gave Cyprus to Guy of Lusignan in 1192. At that time many Franks were pedaled from their possessions in Syria and Palestine by the Muslims. Guy encouraged them to bench here. My Lady's husband, King Peter, was Guy's progeny.
"But here is the Byzantine Church. The dome is long gone. There in the east end of the church was the altar. On the north side of the Church is this chapel with the picture of the Annunciation.
"North of the mosque attribute namely the old refectory. Many a period I sat in this hall, a handsome warrior at my side, smiling and flirting, drinking and eating,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dance and, yes, well, I am creature punished for my sins. But imagine the lobby filled with us Frankish gods and ladies, in our brightly colored silks and satins, gold jewelry, and agreeable iron armor. Can you listen, faintly, the minstrels singing? Come out this course to the east. This namely the belvedere. Have you ever discerned such a fine outlook? After the evening repast, numerous a damsel and her knight stole out of the hall to... admire the outlook.
"Now north afresh, via the buttery and the kitchens. Here is the terrace where the royalty and their preferences ...admired the view. All forward here are the rooms where the King transacted business.
"In these chambers the men-at-arms slept meantime they were aboard duty. They guarded the King, and the magnificent open cistern. We forever feared poisoning. We were fearful of the Muslims. We were afraid of our Cypriot slaves, with their Greek language and their Orthodox religion. And we were afraid of one different, forever jostling because power and influence. When warriors jostle, blood streams. And their women are no gentler.
"Now we will rise to the upper ward. Past the entrance is the old Byzantine watchtower. To the northwardly you tin see the pantries.
"That two-story building on the west holds the royal suites. A wooden gallery joined the main floor rooms. Gracefully arched windows gave lovely views from the upper floor. You must imagine the rooms hung with tapestries,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and richly afforded. Many an hour I spent stitching and gossiping. We ladies were averaged to reserve Queen Eleanor merry.
"That was simple while she was 1st married to King Peter. He was all a woman could ask-handsome, chivalrous, darin
