In May 2009,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bilbray was one of seven Republicans among 63 co-sponsors of a bill to give the pharmaceutical and medical device industry three seats on a 21-member board that would review the effectiveness of therapies to determine whether Medicare and perhaps private insurance companies would pay for them.
Steve Irizarry, who helped to plan cigar club events according to the Huffington Post, lobbies on behalf of six pharmaceutical companies. Some of his clients pushed for industry seats on the drug review board—exactly what the legislation Bilbray co-sponsored would provide. One of Irizarry’s clients—Eli Lilly and Co.—was closely involved in the development of the bill, said Greg Kueterman,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a company spokesman.
“It includes many of the protections that the company would be interested in as well as the industry,” he said. “It was shaped up the way that we liked it.” Spak,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], spokeswoman for Baxter, said the company “interacted with members of Congress” on this bill “to help ensure that patients with rare diseases are protected and will continue to have access to therapy.” Irizarry did not return phone calls or an e-mail seeking an interview.
Chaleff said Bilbray co-sponsored this bill because he “believes that bureaucrats should not be making health care decisions for American citizens.” The bill is pending in the House Energy and Commerce Committee. But the fact that it turned up even some evidence of a cancer risk may have profound consequences for a device that people have become accustomed to seeing as extensions of themselves.
From farmers in Africa who rely on cell phones to check crop reports to hedge fund traders obsessively checking Blackberries at trendy restaurants to suburban American kids spending hours calling their friends – people around the world have come to rely on mobile phones as never before. Cell phones send out radioactive energy in a form that’s similar to the one used in microwave ovens, but at very low levels.
There is no accepted theory to explain how or if these weak radio waves can affect the body, beyond heating it to a very small degree. All the same, U.S. and European regulators already limit the energy cell phones can project into the body and today’s digital phones radiate less power than the analog phones that dominated in the early ’90s.
Common advice for those concerned about the radiation is to use a Bluetooth headset,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], since these emit even less power. TEN years ago, Matthew Beason’s duties as a restaurant manager here included driving to the airport to retrieve a weekly shipment of duck confit and paté from New York. “We couldn’t even buy anything like that around here, cheap marlboro gold cigarettes,” said Mr. Beason, who went on to open Six Plates Wine Bar, now one of many ambitious restaurants around Durham.
“Now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], virtually every place in town makes its own.” Of the rivalrous cities that make up the so-called Research Triangle — Chapel Hill,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Raleigh and Durham — Durham 10 years ago was the unkempt sibling: scruffy and aging. “There was no one on the street at night, just the smell of tobacco drying in the warehouses,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” Mr. Beason said.
