The Practice of Jauhar
The somber custom of Jauhar was born out of the fear of the unknown Puma Outdoor, which was accentuated with gruesome tales of the lot of Hindu women captured by the Moslems. Thus the ritual of mass suicide was performed by the women and girls of the royal household in anticipation of capture and humiliation. When defeat in battle became imminent, the women would immolate themselves in a huge fire kept burning in a subterranean chamber. The remaining men, clad in saffron robes, would then fling themselves at the enemy in one last, desperate charge.
Psychosis of Jauhar
Another stronghold of the Rajputs where this practice was honored was at Mewar. The Rajputs are appreciated for their courage and out of the lot the Mewar Rajputs have earned a name for legendry bravery. They were the ones who faced the Khilji and Mughal assault on Rajasthan. They died fighting, but till the end they did not yield. The celebrated tale of the Rani Padmini who committed Jauhar with 300 women to escape from falling into the hands of Alauddin Puma Suede, who had besieged their fort has been retold a hundred thousand times.

However this custom died down as the Rajputs made peace with the Moslem rulers at Delhi. They turned turtle as they started giving their daughters in marriage to the Mughal and Moslem harems. The practice of Jauhar was a negative concept and despite all talk of glorifying it, the fact remains that it was a concept that was dictated by defeat.
The practice of Jauhar had its high point at Mewar and also in Madhya Pradesh under rule of the Tomara dynasty. Jauhar in real terms was a fall out of the fanatical attitude of the Rajputs in guarding the honor of their women. The mere thought of the women falling prey, to the lust of invading Muslims, was anathema to them. Thus at Gwalior Puma Football Shoes, the Jauhar Tank in Gwalior Fort witnessed such a ritual when the fort fell to Altamish.
The Essence of Jauhar
Most people have heard of Sati, the burning of the wife on the funeral pyre of her husband. But many may not have heard of another form of ritual death by burning called Jauhar. There is a subtle difference between the two forms of death. While Sati was universal and was executed sometimes by force, Jauhar on the other hand was entirely voluntary. The earliest records of Jauhar exist from 510 CE. But it really caught on during the consolidation of Moslem rule in India from the 12th to the 16th, century and then petered out as the Rajputs made peace with the Moslem rulers at Delhi.
The Last Jauhar 1567
Jauhar was ritual death by burning by the Rajput women, to save them from rape and dishonor, before their husbands’ expected death in battle. They committed death by burning in preference to other forms of death say by poison, so that the Moslems did not bury them, as it was against Hindu custom. While committing Jauhar the Rajput women dressed in all their finery with jewelry before jumping into the cauldron of fire. Women carried out Jauhar when they were besieged, and their case was hopeless as the men had decided to face their foes and fight to death. But it was not made compulsory, and many Rajput women were captured and taken into the Moslem harems.
