Navajo Blanket Symbols Explained
Navajo rugs and blankets use symbols fashioned after phenomenon in the natural world. Designs are made from repetition of these symbols, built up into patterns.
Horizontal Stripes – The earliest Navajo weavings are from what is known as the "Classic Period." These blankets were composed of a simple pattern of alternating wide horizontal stripes. According to Antiques Road Show Appraiser Doug Deihl, the colors used in these blankets were limited to "brown, blue, and white bands and stripes."The Step Pattern – The use of flat geometric shapes is characteristic of Navajo design. The repeating Step Pattern is associated with the idea of change. It represents the steps of the Kiva, the building where religious rituals are traditionally performed by Native people in the American South West. The Eyedazzler – Introduced in the late 1890s and early 1900s, which is known as the 3rd Period of Navajo Textile Design, the Eyedazzler pattern uses concentric motifs of serrated diamonds. The Eyedazzler is said to represent natural phenomena, such as the whirlwind, desert storms, and the spiritual idea of eternal renewal.Whirling Logs – The Navajo Whirling Log pattern is often confused with a swastika. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the cruciform pattern with each arm bent at a right angle has its true origins in a Navajo legend in which the whirling logs were used by the gods to rescue a Navajo hero from a whirlpool.Early Crystal/The Waterbug Motif – This type of Navajo rug gets its name from the trading post at Crystal, New Mexico, where it was originally sold. The design features repeated hook shapes, and the 'Waterbug' motif composed of an 'X' with a horizontal bar though the middle. The Early Crystal design suggests an Oriental influence on Navajo textile designers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as it is similar to the crab or spider motif found in Oriental carpets.Recommended BooksNavajo: Tradition and Change in the Southwest, Wolfgang Lindig,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], New York: Facts on File, 1991.Indian Blankets and Their Makers, George Wharton James, New York: Dover Publications, 1974/1914.The Navajo Nation: A Visitor's Guide, Patrick and Joan Lavin, New York: Hippocrene Books,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2008.
Buyers of Navajo Indian blankets own a piece of the history of the American South West. Every Navajo blanket tells the story of its people. Archaeologists believe Navajos learned the art of weaving from their Pueblo Indian neighbors. The use of wool was probably introduced by Spanish explorers. The blanket worn as an item of clothing suggests the influence of the Mexican Indian poncho. More recently, the influence of Anglo-American traders led to the production of Navajo rugs for sale, along with the traditional blankets.
