Although the Romans suffered devastating defeats in the majority of the major battles in the Second Punic War Puma Shoes, they were able to rebound. Scipio, a Roman general, had been elsewhere during many of Rome's major losses, but he proved to be the supreme commander of Rome late in the war. Hannibal's Carthaginian forces were mostly worn down in the final years, as the Roman Republic's mass had it issuing out more and more troops when others were lost. Scipio negotiated with Carthage before the final battles of the war, trying to find terms with which both sides could be satisfied. As such terms were unattainable, the Second Punic War military commanders would meet head to head in battle.
Hannibal of Carthage went on the offensive upon seeing Saguntum, an Iberian port city, politically overtaken by Rome, despite its originally neutral standing. He laid siege to the city, and took it, and from their, set up a campaign to penetrate deep into the heart of the Roman Empire's territory. He put together a force that would indeed defeat the Romans in several major battles, but it was another aspect of Rome that protected it from defeat, even by such a competent opponent as Hannibal. Hannibal was successful at such potentially pivotal battles as Trebia in 218 BCE, and Cannae, in 216 BCE, (the latter in which Hannibal defeated a much larger and more organized Roman unit), but the Roman Republic's mass was too great. In both of these two major battles mentioned above, Hannibal would surely have lost had he not been blessed with a military planning ability superior to perhaps any other commander in history, which allowed him tactical methods of dismantling superior units.
Hannibal was only a young man when he, backed by the Carthaginian congress, assumed control of the North African empire's military. He at first commanded ground forces held in Iberia, now present day Spain. Hannibal played the role of the aggressor in the Second Punic War Puma Footwear, as his hatred of Rome and perhaps unrealistic determination to prevail may have been his only characteristics that actually hindered his judgment and military competence.

Hannibal would have no part in the negotiations. He again prepared for battle after a brief stay in Carthage due to his being initially recalled when Roman negotiators were sent. However, this time, as Carthage's forces were exhausted, the battle took place in North Africa, near Carthage, at Zama. Scipio had petitioned the Roman senate to allow him to invade Carthage, which eventually, it allowed, as Scipio had proved his worth by wrenching Iberia from Carthage's grasp. Many of Hannibal's troops used at the Battle of Zama in 202 BCE were soldiers acquired from Roman territories that he had taken, meaning their loyalty and motivation for fighting under Carthage was questionable. The Carthaginian force outnumbered the Romans before the battle. However, the Romans had a superior cavalry at the final meeting of the war at Zama, despite Hannibal's use of war elephants, which were at times able to
The Second Punic War, which pitted Carthage against Rome, according to Adrian Goldsworthy's novel, The Fall of Carthage, was mainly instigated by Hannibal of Carthage, who had been raised by his father Hamilcar (commander in the First Punic War) to despise the Roman Republic. Although Hannibal's military tactics were superb, and his cunning, vast Puma Clydes, it was the Roman Scipio who ended the conflict victorious.
