The Case For Bird Hunting Preserves
The Double Barreled Shotgun is a True Classic
Upland Bird Hunting in Western Colorado
Don’t Choke Up Most shooters use far too tight of a choke for hunting. Modern ammunition patterns very tightly on its own. For 90% of hunting, a modified choke is the tightest constriction necessary. For most upland game and waterfowl, an improved cylinder is more ideal. A full choke has very little use other than for wild turkey hunting.
Personal Shooting Style
Stay In Range If a bird appears to be too far, it is. Despite hunt camp bragging, few people can shoot well beyond 40 yards. Judging target speed beyond this range is too difficult.
Wingshooting Tips And Tricks
The second is the swing-through method, commonly used on crossing targets. The shooter starts his swing behind the bird [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], accelerates rapidly, shoots as soon as the barrel “blots out” the target but keeps swinging past. This method is favored for ducks over decoys and pheasants or partridges on open fields.
The swing-through is a superior method in many ways because it is fast and versatile. It is also one of the easiest to master. Proficient wingshooters generally use some variation of the swing-through method.
How well do these methods work? A shotgun is meant to be dynamic and moving. If the barrel is stopped at all during the shot, missed or wounded game will be the result.
The first is snap-shooting, which is to point the gun quickly at the spot the target will likely be and shoot. This touted as the best method when hunting game such as grouse and woodcock in dense woods.
This is why snap-shooting is the worst method. It does work [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it breeds too many bad habits that ruin performance on other game. There are plenty of “snap-shots” who can fill their game bag in the grouse coverts, but fare dismally on waterfowl or pheasants. If the game surprises them at close range, they often score, but as soon as they have time to think about the shot, they seize up.
Keep It Real When shooting clay pigeons [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], keep the shotgun at “port arms” when calling for the bird, only mounting it when visual contact is made with the target. This simulates real hunting more effectively than the competition practice of starting with the gun mounted. Shooters who form this habit are invariably too slow on game in the field.
Wingshooting is challenging, but not impossible to learn. The swing-through is probably one of the best methods to put the novice well on his way to bagging game, but the real key is feeling out one's shooting style. This can't be learned from a book.
The final technique is sustained lead. The shooter starts swinging with the barrel ahead of the target, shoots and maintains follow-through. This is said to be ideal for long-range pass-shooting at waterfowl or doves.
Sustained lead can be effective but is hard to learn. Estimating lead is difficult at long range since the birds appear to be moving slower than they really are.
Everybody shoots differently, so rather than clutter up one’s mind with which method to use for a given situation, it’s best to get on the sporting clays range to determine what style of shooting works best.
