“Ectoplasmic masks and limbs are indeed larval: they promise the emergence of forms, but do not deliver them.” (Warner 296) Here Warner uses vague personification to describe ectoplasm, giving it personal efficacy to 'promise.' The ectoplasm is the result of the fetish of modernist spiritualism for tangible product. After years of the same séance activity and the same arguments that the séance was a sham, mediums began to produce a tangible product.
The amorphous nature of the ectoplasm allows the medium to retain the shroud of secrecy and mystery which is essential to her trade. Common to magic, the dualism between concealment and revelation is central to the medium's effectiveness in convincing her clientèle. The shape, substance, and origin of the ectoplasm is wildly obscure. Further, the movements and nature of the ectoplasm are ambiguous and change from medium to medium and from time to time. Attempts to prove the production of ectoplasm as invented by the medium will necessarily fall short of scientific proof due to the variety of ectoplasmic manifestations. This [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], anyway, is the hope of the medium—or, more readily, her employer.
Further evidence of the fetish character of the ectoplasm is the means by which it escapes the body of the medium. “Helen Duncan presented her body as a porous vehicle for the phenomena, which exuded from all orifices—nose, breast, ears, navel, vagina.” Mrs. Duncan was also known to enter trances while communing with the spirits. This is a characteristic of the magician as described by Mauss. (Mauss 34)
The ectoplasm, then, is a means by which the medium may persuade her audience of her authenticity. “Magic [or spiritualism], like religion, is viewed as a totality; either you believe it all, or you do not.” (Mauss 113) Thus, if the audience will not believe its ears when it hears the vocalizations of the spirit nor its eyes when it sees the spirit move objects around the room, perhaps it will believe the totality of its senses when touch, smell, and sight are encountered with the ectoplasm. If the medium is able to convince the audience on any evidence that she produces, they will consequently believe the totality of her endeavors. So, anyway, she hopes.
While the ectoplasm is clearly nowhere near as wonderful a fetish as the commodity—being a result of mere table-turning—it does share many of the qualities of commodity fetishism. As is true for the commodity, the ectoplasm [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “[has] no connexion with [its] physical properties and with the material relations arising therefrom.” That is, the composition of the ectoplasm (e.g. lining silk as was described above) has nothing to do with the relations between the ectoplasm and the spirit, audience, or itself1.
