The Future for the Staffordshire Hoard

Sutton Hoo and the Staffordshire Hoard
Buried Treasure Found in England
Treasure Finds From the United Kingdom
Parts of the treasure were displayed at the Potteries Museum in Stoke-on-Trent and in Birmingham Museum, attracting huge local interest. Over 40,000 people came to see the hoard in Birmingham (the museum extended opening hours to accommodate them) and 50,000 visited the temporary display in Stoke: the exhibition was extended for a further month and is currently (March 2010) still running.
Assuming that the campaign is successful (as seems likely given the overwhelming support from both the public and from government bodies at various levels) and that the Hoard can be saved from being broken up or put on display outside its local area,
The Campaign to Acquire the Staffordshire Hoard
Ownership of the Staffordshire Hoard
Once determined as Treasure Trove, a valuation is placed on finds and they are then offered to museums for sale. The proceeds are divided equally between the finder and the owner of the land where the discovery was made. In November 2009 the value of the Staffordshire hoard was set at a staggering decision did not, however, meet with total approval – a group calling themselves the ‘Acting Witan of Mercia’ (a witan being an Anglo-Saxon parliament) claimed that the treasure belonged to the Mercian nation and that the Crown had no remit over it. The group, which claims to uphold the independence of the former Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia, continues to maintain that the treasure belongs to the people of Mercia and should not be sold.
Sadly for many a treasure hunter, the privilege of ‘finders keepers’ has no basis whatsoever in law. Under the provision of the Treasure Act of 1996, any findings must be reported to the local coroner who will determine ownership. In the case of the Staffordshire Hoard [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the findings were deemed to be treasure trove and, as such, to belong to the Crown.
The hoard is mainly but not exclusively gold – 5kg in weight – and contains numerous silver items as well. Many of the artefacts are set with precious stones. Rings [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sword hilts, fragments of plate and helmet and even three gold crosses were all uncovered – significantly larger in quantity that the previously best-known hoard, that unearthed at Sutton Hoo in 1939.
In July 2009 an amateur treasure hunter using a metal detector which (according to The Times) he bought many years ago for only £2.50, discovered buried treasure in a Staffordshire field. The collection of artefacts which he uncovered, together with many more unearthed later by professional archaeologists [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has since been identified as seventh century in origin. Comprising over 1,500 items in total, it is reckoned to be the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found.
In October 2009, in partnership with local authorities, the British Museum and the Portable Antiquities Fund (as well as a range of other bodies) the two museums set up an appeal to raise the £3.3 million required to secure the Staffordshire Hoard for permanent display in the Midlands. By late February, over £1m had been raised through public and corporate donations.
Having been declared Crown property, the Hoard is now available for sale to Museums. While the Mercian nationalists’ view is regarded a little extreme, it isn’t isolated and there is strong feeling within the area that the Hoard should remain within the Midlands. In consequence, a campaign has been launched to raise the money to buy the artefacts and place them on display in the cities of Birmingham and Stoke.
