Cutting is a coping mechanism for dealing with emotional pain. People who cut do so in an attempt to experience relief from the difficult emotions they are experiencing. For them, physical pain is preferable to psychological pain.
Cutting is a psychological disorder that involves using a sharp object like a knife, razor blade, or needle to cut, scrape, or scratch one's own skin. Cutting is categorized as self-injury and self-harm. It is also sometimes called self-injurious behavior,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], self-inflicted violence, self-mutilation, and self-abuse.
Purpose of Cutting and Self-Mutilation
Young people make up the biggest percentage of cutters. Adolescents and teens experience many pressures as they mature into adulthood and frequently have underdeveloped methods and strategies for coping with difficulties. Though cutting only obscures the true cause of the individual’s suffering, it does provide temporary relief from the intensity of the emotional pain.
Cutting behavior is often used as a strategy for trying to improving one’s psychological outlook, not a suicide attempt. Cutters usually do not want to permanently harm themselves; they want to gain immediate relief from emotional discomfort. Some self-harmers are suicidal, but cutting itself, despite

Myths About Self-Inflicted Violence
Sometimes cutting is viewed as an attention-getting ploy. However, this is typically not the case. Cutters often experience intense guilt and shame over their cutting and try to hide the behavior from their family and friends by wearing long-sleeve shirts and long pants. When confronted about cutting, many deny that they cut.
Cutting often occurs in conjunction with other mental health problems. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and eating disorders are two of the most common conditions that are seen in individuals who self-mutilate.
There are a few misconceptions about cutting that obscure the real reasons that people engage in the behavior. It is commonly thought only young people cut, cutting is an attempt to get attention or sympathy, and cutting represents suicidal tendencies. None of these,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however, is accurate.
Pre-teens, teens, and young adults do make up the largest percentage of cutters, but cutting is a psychological disorder that occurs in people of all ages, including the elderly. Many cutters begin self-injuring when they are teenagers and continue cutting into their adult years.
Cutting, like eating disorders, often represents an attempt to exert control over one’s world that feels out of control. The body is the one area of life that an individual — particularly a young person — has nearly complete control over.
The specific reasons people cut themselves are varied. Cutting is frequently used to cover up difficult feelings, such as anger, sadness, grief, depression, desperation, hopelessness,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hurt, frustration, anxiety, self-hate, alienation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and emptiness. Sometimes people cut to deal with feeling overwhelmed or experiencing intense pressure or tension in life. Some cut to find relief from difficult relationships and situations, which sometimes include emotional, physical, sexual, or other abuse.
Self-Injury and Other Psychological Disorders
Cutting frequently begins with a desire to ease the immediate pain that a person is suffering, but after the individual experiences the temporary effectiveness of cutting at easing tension, this strategy sometimes becomes a compulsion that the person cannot control well. OCD is marked by similar compulsive and addictive patterns of behavior.
