Tenor Alan Bennett sang his arioso (a hybrid structure between recitative and aria) Behold and see, with stunning clarity and intensity. However, the crowning glory of part two was the infamous cornerstone and concluding movement of part two – the Hallelujah chorus Taken from the book of Revelation, the audience stood for this passionate, stirring rendition. Tears streamed down the faces of many audience members as this, the most famous of all Handelian choruses, acted as a natural link from God’s triumph to the third part which concerns Judgment Day and the glorification of Christ. The ensemble received a magnificent thunderous ovation.
The near-capacity audience (which grew after one late-seating break) at this second concert of the Deck The Hall series was pious and respectable as Handel’s sacred three- part oratorio became the recipient of excellent choral singing and orchestral playing. The orchestra played on conventional instruments with updated fittings as well as on Baroque period instruments such as the harpsichord and antique organ. The principal cellist used a Baroque Lamy bow and the principal violinist performed on the Giorgio Gatti Dresden violin.
Part One – The Birth of Christ
Messiah is an English oratorio composed by George Frideric Handel and is his most famous creation and one of the most popular works in choral literature. The libretto is entirely drawn from the King James and Great Bibles and interprets the Christian doctrine of the Messiah. It was written during the Baroque era of classical music history.
Beautifully sung by four soloists: soprano Rosemary Joshua, countertenor David Daniels, tenor Alan Bennett and bass-baritone Joshua Hopkins, each vocal part was filled with the superlative artistry and with concise top-to-bottom command of their vocal range. The soloists completely mesmerized the audience with their clear tones and projection and during certain arias the spirituality, emotion, and beauty of their performances brought tears to the eyes of many.
About Handel’s Messiah - The Text and the Music
Part Two concerns the Passion and the triumph of the Risen Lord. The da capo aria He was despised, sung by countertenor David Daniels, was thoroughly engaging as were the choruses, accompagnato, and recitative cadences. Then [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], suddenly after the chorus delivered Let all the angels of God, Labadie stepped down from the podium and announced that the acoustic bassist had to re-string his instrument! After a 10-minute delay countertenor David Daniels delivered his stunning air Thou art gone up on high. He was simply amazing.
Handel used harmonic sequences that created a sense of power, majesty and emotional intensity. The 24-piece orchestra was absolutely superb. The strings blazed flawlessly and the 32 person chorus was simply beautiful despite its minimalist stature. Many choirs tout over 300 voices to perform this magnificent Hallelujah but Labadie’s choir was absolutely beautiful.
The Messiah libretto is an arrangement by Charles Jennens of various passages from Scripture [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], divided into three parts. Part one concerns with the birth of Christ, as foretold in various prophecies form the Old Testament and described in Gospel passages on the Nativity. The most often performed section of part one is the choral interpretation of For unto us a child is born, which can be heard in condensed form during many Christmas concerts and recitals.
