It’s true that for American audiences of the time, accustomed to Busby Berkeley style musicals, and upbeat music, Piaf must have seemed very dreary. To some people, she still will. She is however, the epitome of French music of this period- her music is described as ‘cabaret’ or the intensely French Chanson.
Her last hit was in 1961, two years before she died, and appropriately named ‘Non, je ne regrette rien’.
Her most famous tracks include ‘La Vie en Rose’, penned in 1945, it entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.
Her fame was secured during a series of concerts she gave at the Paris Olympia music hall (This venue is still going strong as one of Paris’ top venues for national and international artists).
Today, despite her grim beginnings, Edith Piaf is now remembered as the quintessential and most famous of female French singers and mistress of the Chanson genre.
These concerts in 1955, ’56, ’58 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ‘61 and ’62 were put out on record and have never gone out of print.
By sixteen she was living by herself in Pigalle and singing on the streets. She had a child at seventeen, whom she also left behind and who died aged two.
‘Discovered’ in 1935 during a street performance by nightclub owner Louis Leplee, she played many nightclub gigs with an intense publicity campaign that led to her making two records that same year. From there her popularity in France sky-rocketed, though she was not popular at first in the US- American audiences found her too dismal.

She tried again at touring the States after the second world war and after one influential New York review, she finally gained popularity. Piaf eventually appeared on the Ed Sullivan show no fewer than eight times and held two concerts at the Carnegie Hall, in 1956 and ’57.
After Leplee was murdered by gangsters in 1936, Edith Piaf’s career was threatened as she had been a suspect, having previous ties to the gangsters involved. In order to save her career, she teamed up with Raymond Alosso [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who changed her name to ‘Piaf’, a colloquialism for sparrow, alluding to her tiny stature.
