Teen Mom on MTV Follows Four Girls

The new seasons’ cast were themselves viewers of last season’s show. When they found out they were pregnant did they immediately think “Well, this is not ideal. But, hey, I can be on MTV now!”? Did MTV cross a line by renewing the shows for second season? The first seasons’ girls were already pregnant and dealing with the consequences when they were approached by MTV for the show, and the first seasons did successfully paint a brutally real picture of teen parenthood. But when does it stop being an accurate portrait of girls who made unfortunate decisions and begin being a way to get on television for young women and men?
MTV, in effort to make teen audiences more aware of the problem of teen pregnancy and the difficulties of being a teen mom, developed 16 and Pregnant to follow the pregnancy of six American teens and the births of their children. The show tracked the difficulties the teen girls had with their families and with the fathers of their children, as well as the problems they experienced with finishing school and dealing with peers. With the success of 16 and Pregnant, MTV saw fit to continue to follow the girls into the first year of life as mothers with Teen Mom. This show further explored financial woes and even more family and relationship problems, successfully showing the reality of being a teen parent.
On Facebook and other social networking sites there are fan pages for the girls of 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom. While stars of the show like Maci Bookout, now 18, try to maintain their privacy by keeping their personal pages private from fans, fans of Bookout have created pages for the television star where they post pictures of Bookout and her son Bentley,Jordan Classic 87, and where fans can post comments. Bookout’s fans post how much they adore the teen mom and ask how her son is doing and express their hopes that she will add them as friends.
Teen Moms as Celebrities
The controversy surrounding these two shows poses an interesting question. Is MTV glorifying teen pregnancy and parenthood by giving these youngsters their own television show? After all,Jordan 3 fire red, while they are dealing with the challenges of raising children on limited funds and in less than ideal circumstances,Jordan Retro 10, the girls and their babies’ fathers have become celebrities among MTV viewers. With the renewal of second seasons of 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom even more controversy arose. Is MTV telling teenagers everywhere “Get pregnant and you too could have your own t.v. show”?
