Movie Review: Be Kind Rewind
The obvious choice and next step in his trajectory was to make the leap to the big screen. His first feature film, Human Nature was received with mixed reviews. Maybe a slightly slow start, but that was soon to be rectified. His next movie, The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind had people dancing for joy. Partly due to Jim Carrey finally proving himself as a proper actor and partly to the use of Gondry’s tricks previously seen in his music clips, this venture was a complete hit and elevated him to cult status.
Born in Versailles, France in 1963, Gondry is considered one of the most innovative film directors of recent years. His firm grip on fantasy and magic allows him to create in a different manner to his peers. No limits seem to exist and each new creative idea is tackled with enthusiasm.
Sharing his skewed views became one of his goals and he aimed high. Advertisements for Smirnoff Vodka and Gap quickly followed. Gondry has been extremely influential, creating a slew of copycat work that just never quite hits the mark like he does. The Smirnoff ad was particularly important as he invented a technique, the bullet time [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which was later used in the movie, The Matrix. His advertisement for Levi 501 jeans “Drugstore” hold the Guinness World Record for the amount of prizes that it garnered. All this led to several bands and musical artists lining up for collaborations, many of which have gone down in video clip history. Daft Punk, Beck, The Chemical Brothers, The Foo Fighters or Radiohead are just a few examples.

Gondry’s Films
While banging the drums for French rock band Oui Oui, he also employed part of his time to creating and directing their video clips. “Les Callioux” is one of his first animation efforts and depicts the different Oui Oui band members going about different types of activities. “La Ville” is saturated with vivid colours and plays with surrealist elements, exaggerating reality. Another example is “Ma Maison”, which offsets shots of nature with images of bugs and people dressed as bugs, all with a dexterous busyness and erratic movements. Such was the impact of these video clips [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that Björk soon sat up and took notice.
Yet this will not stop him. Art installations, film and clip DVDs, a short film, Interior Design, for the Tokyo ode DVD are just a few of the different mediums that he has tried his hand at. Nothing resists his magic and charm. He will continue to be one of the greatest for many years to come.
Their first collaboration was the video “Human Behaviour”. This was Gondry’s starting point to a long-lasting joint effort with Björk and the beginning of the journey to where he finds himself today. Currently, there are seven Björk video clips created and directed by the filmmaker.
Therefore, 2008’s Be Kind, Rewind was a general disappointment for diehard fans, as he moved away from his usual techniques and story-telling.
