Prejudice against untouchables is still especially pronounced in rural areas. The Indian caste system is organized into four main groups. There is also a fifth group that is considered to be outside of the caste system; the people in this class are literally outcasts. Hinduism, with a central belief in reincarnation, has scripture that explains how people are born into a certain caste based on the karma they acquired in their previous incarnations. The caste system has been part of Hinduism and Indian society for over 1,500 years. Officially, caste discrimination, especially as it affects the lowest level of society, the untouchables or Dalits, is against the law. However, rooting out an ancient system of religiously sanctified discrimination and persecution, which is so entrenched in society, is proving to be extremely challenging. Centuries of oppression, prejudice, discrimination, and shunning have made the Dalit struggle for basic rights extremely challenging.
